In October 1917 twenty five J36's were loaned to the Government for use in occupiued France. The Railway Operating Department (ROD) men in France found them to be capable, easy to maintain, and relatively comfortable. All were returned to the NBR between April and July 1919. and to commemorate this war work, these J36s received World War 1 related names. Not all the J36's received names but as this photograph shows, all were equally fine locomotives.
